Puttonyos

Puttonyos is a category of Hungarian sweet wine that’s best known for its link to Tokaj’s traditional winemaking. The word “Puttonyos” refers to the method used to measure the amount of aszú berries added to the base wine. In simple terms, a higher Puttonyos level usually means more concentrated sweetness and richer flavours, so it’s a helpful way to understand the style before you pour.

Expect wines in this range to showcase the characteristic character of botrytised grapes, often bringing together notes of honeyed fruit, apricot, and spiced pastry. Depending on the vintage and the Puttonyos level, you may also find hints of marmalade, dried fruit and gentle caramel. Many tasters also notice a lovely balance, where sweetness is met with a refreshing, lifted acidity.

If you’re choosing a Puttonyos wine for your table, it’s great with desserts such as fruit tarts and cakes, but it can also work beautifully with blue cheese or rich, gently spiced dishes. If you enjoy exploring regional classics, this is an excellent place to start.
