Airfield Estates Mustang 2019 £37.50

Airfield Estates Mustang 2019 is a captivating red from Yakima Valley, Washington, where ripe fruit meets a darker, savoury edge. Crafted as a Rhone-inspired blend of Grenache, Mourvèdre and Syrah/Shiraz, it opens with rich aromas of cassis and sweet plum, alongside juicy notes of strawberry jam. As the glass settles, hints of wet stone and gentle spice add depth and intrigue, promising a wine with more layers than first impressions.

On the palate, this medium to full-bodied red moves from plush berry flavours into exotic secondary tones: roasted game, black olive, anise and a fine touch of white pepper. The tannins are polished rather than forceful, while the fruit stays beautifully focused through the finish. Ideal for pairing with slow-cooked meats, grilled vegetables with herbs, or a hearty sausage platter, Mustang 2019 is an excellent choice for anyone exploring the best of Washington reds—so why not add it to your next order from the range?

USA

The United States has confidently come of age as one of the world's top wine-producing nations. Its reputation may be founded on the global fame of Napa and Sonoma, but the U.S. is home to countless lesser-known wine regions producing world-class wines (obvious examples include Oregon's Willamette Valley and the New York Finger Lakes). Wine has been made in The States for around 400 years, but it is only in the last 40 that American wine really began to earn respect on a global scale. The U.S. is now the world's fourth-biggest wine-producing nation (behind France, Italy and Spain) and produces roughly 18.5 million hectoliters each year.

Washington

The Cascade Mountains create a rain shadow effect, blocking the wet conditions on the other side from the Pacific Ocean. The Columbia, Walla Walla, Snake and Yakima rivers provide much-needed irrigation, air circulation and cooling conditions. Ice Age floods left behind layers of sandy, volcanic soils which favor grape-growing and repel phylloxera (along with the cold winters). This means grapes are grown from single root stocks instead of the hybrids found in most of the world to prevent the spread of Phylloxera. Syrah, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Riesling and Chardonnay are the most popular varietals cultivated. These benefit from a long growing season that promotes proper phenolic balance in the grapes.
