France

Few would argue that France is the country that long ago set the standards by which wine is judged. There are of course exceptions; Germany's Rieslings, Spain's Sherry and Portugal's Port are examples of non-French wines that are universally accepted as models to be admired and emulated. But no other country in the world can boast anything like France's influence over the wine world's now well-established benchmarks. The wine styles produced in Champagne, Alsace, Bordeaux, Burgundy, Loire and the Rhone have become targets that countless winegrowers around the world aim at, in the first instance by planting the same grape varieties. If you still have a bit of exploring to do before you can say you know well the world of wine, there can be no better place to start (or finish!) than France.

Loire Valley

The Loire Valley is the 3rd largest appellation region in France, comprising a total of 50 appellations, denominations and IGP. The area between Chalonnes-sur-Loire (Maine et Loire) and Sully-sur-Loire (Loiret) has been awarded UNESCO World Heritage status – one of only ten European winegrowing regions distinguished in this way...
Loire Valley Wines are characterized by their freshness and diversity of colour, material and tastes. Everybody knows about the delicious rose. Good, refreshing wines, as fruity as you could wish for, with a delicate touch of sweetness. The reds, whether fruity or serious, are great food wines. Whites come in all styles from dry to very sweet, providing something for every occasion. Sparkling wines, another Loire speciality, are made using the traditional method...
Loire Valley wines are unusual in that they are, for the most part, produced from a single varietal: Melon de Bourgogne for Nantes area; Chenin, Cabernet and Gamay in Anjou, Saumur and Touraine; Sauvignon in Touraine and the Centre; and also Grolleau, Pinot Meunier, Pineau d’Aunis, Romorantin etc. This breadth of variety is completely unique, and gives a very diverse, highly expressive range of wines.
