Carmenere
Carménère is a captivating red grape variety, best known for its rich, ripe character and its ability to offer plenty of flavour without ever feeling heavy. It’s originally from Bordeaux, but today it’s most strongly associated with Chile, where the variety has found ideal conditions to express its full potential.
When Carménère is well made, you can expect aromas of dark fruit such as black cherry and blackberry, often alongside green pepper, cocoa or sweet spice notes. On the palate, it tends to be smooth and velvety, with medium to full body and gentle tannins. You’ll usually find a pleasant freshness in the background, which makes it a great partner for a wide range of meals.
This is a grape that suits both everyday drinking and more considered evenings. Look for bottles that mention Carménère specifically, especially from producers focusing on single varietal expressions. For food, it pairs particularly nicely with roast meats, grilled vegetables, hearty stews and smoky dishes.
If you enjoy wines that feel characterful and approachable, Carménère is a fantastic choice to explore within the wider range of grape varietals.
