Montepulciano
Montepulciano is a grape variety that’s loved for its reliable, food friendly style. It’s best known for producing red wines with a pleasing balance of ripe fruit and gentle, earthy notes. Depending on where it’s grown, you’ll often find flavours such as black cherry, plum and dried herbs, along with a soft touch of spice. Many bottles are medium bodied, making them particularly versatile at the table.
If you’re new to Montepulciano, it’s worth knowing that the grape’s name can be confusing. Despite the similarity, it doesn’t come from the village of Montepulciano in Tuscany. Instead, it’s most closely associated with Abruzzo in central Italy, where the climate helps create a naturally expressive profile without being overly heavy.
In the glass, look for a smooth texture and moderate tannins, which means the wine generally pairs easily with everything from pasta dishes and roast chicken to chargrilled vegetables and hearty stews. With that in mind, it’s a fantastic choice for building a well rounded wine collection across the Grapes range.
