Primitivo
Primitivo is a red grape loved for its warmth on the palate and its ability to deliver real character in the glass. Hailing primarily from southern Italy, this variety is closely related to Zinfandel, yet it often brings a slightly smoother, fruit-forward style that many drinkers find irresistibly easy to enjoy.
When grown in the right conditions, Primitivo wines typically show ripe black fruit such as plum and blackberry, alongside notes of juicy cherry, warm spices and a gentle hint of sweetness. You may also notice a touch of liquorice or cocoa, depending on the winemaking and how the wine is matured. Most bottles will sit nicely between medium and full-bodied, with approachable tannins and a rounded finish.
Primitivo is a great choice if you enjoy wines that feel comforting and savoury at the same time. It pairs well with classic Italian dishes like pasta with rich sauces, wood-fired pizza, slow-cooked meats and grilled vegetables. Serve slightly below room temperature for the best balance of fruit and spice.
